Monday Moments - Groundhog's Day

A PA friend posted this on Friday.  So today's the day - Groundhog Day...

It's not looking good for a lot of the states.

And here's another take on it

This was our end to  January.  Ray broke up 2-1/2 chunks of ice and I shoveled it.  The driveway took two hours to do.  Whew!  We were sore.  That's a whole other level of exercise.

We're in  the DFW area.  My sister in DE reported a foot of snow over the course of a few days. Same with my brother in PA.  That's a LOT of shoveling. Plus temps  in the  teens with no real break ahead.
This week is going up to the 60s by noon  each day for us.  It better get sunnier.  Saturday, February 7th, I'm  going to do our  YMCA polar plunge.  Yowza.  I'll find out if I can walk on  water.

Take care, where ever you are. Watch for ice glaze.  I recommend indoors, reading, and hot cocoa.
(oh, and stock  up on Girl Scout cookies).

Finally Friday - Groundhog Day

Happy Groundhog Day!  Will the groundhog see it's shadow?   Six more weeks of winter ahead?

Here are some  past February snow and ice pics.   We'll see what happens

I sure hope the grid holds up and we keep  power  on.
A nice dusting of snow is fine, but let's not go crazy.

Hot chocolate and a good book - I can handle that for  six more weeks. But can Ray?  Ha! He'll be waving the white flag.

Cheers all and I hope it's a sunny warm weekend.

Six-Week Countdown

heater groans

wallow in winter remnants

pilled sweatshirts

sinus sniffles

cough

curse

mythic groundhog

Actually - this poem is a myth. Today in Texas it was sunny and fairly warm. I wore my Ugg boots just because...in theory it's "winter".  I do have sniffles but it's due to early allergies. The mountain cedar has gone berserk and there's far too much junk in the air. I've avoided flu and did have the flu shot, so I anticipate being healthy. However, I grew up in PA and we (when students) revered the official pronouncement - six more weeks of winter - it incited groans and yet the hope for more snow days. Now, as an adult, I do not want ice days in Texas.

We'll see what happens, but February somehow is the turning point. It gets a tad lighter each morning as we head to work and head home. In Texas, we rake a bit in the yard, trim dead branches, and think about pansies or even "When will the daffodils and tulips start budding?" Yes, it will be too early, and yet as we sorta wish our lives away, we do keep looking to tomorrow and tomorrow and the end of winter days.

Cheers! Let's toast winter with a cup of cocoa...um, add some Bailey's?? Sure.

Groundhog's Day

Last year at this time, Bedford was in blizzard conditions. Our Super Bowl party was postponed. Getting to work was precarious.

This year, 2012, winter is a yawn. Over seventy degrees today. The weekend might plummet to the fifties thanks to a "cold" spell. You just never know. Here's a Groundhog's Day celebratory poem I wrote last year:

Six-Week Countdown

heater groans
wallow in winter remnants
pilled sweatshirts
sinus sniffles
cough

curse
mythic groundhog

Growing up in PA, Groundhog's Day was a mythic turning point for the winter. It's ingrained in my soul and I shall read the prognostication. Then I'll sit on our patio in TX and read a book.
