Slide into Summer by Joanne Faries
Wax paper, please?
Mom always had extra rolls
tore sheets for neighborhood kids
everyone chose a section
tall kids covered the top
little kids crowded the end
we rubbed and rubbed and rubbed and rubbed wax paper
covering every square inch
backyard metal sliding board
slick and shiny
glint hurt our eyes
Took turns sliding

until sheen diminshed
then we rubbed and rubbed and rubbed wax paper again and again
burnished gleam beckoned
we sailed down and popped off airborne
tumbling into sandpit
King John - the good, but mostly the bad ...

We have different memories, different experiences. When I was a kid we used to fold a small piece of wax paper (we call it grease-proof paper) over a comb and play a tune on it by letting it vibrate over our lips.
ReplyDeleteI've never used wax paper to make sliding boards slippery. Sounds like a good trick!
ReplyDeleteI didn't recognise what was going on here, so I'm glad I'm not alone. It sounds fund though!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Rosalind. We used to use waxed paper and a comb to make homemade kazoos, too. But I've never heard of using it to make a slide slippery. (Then again, I never HAD a slide...) Good job with the poem, though. Especially the visual SLIPSTREAMFAST part.
