Stand up Straight

I am in PA again with my Dad. He had his back surgery two weeks ago and yesterday the staples were removed. Now the goal is to get moving. He needs to wean from the walker and use his cane. He needs to do his leg exercises.

And he needs to sit up straight, and stand up straight.

We all do.

That's a lesson I'm learning with my time with Dad and the physical therapy nurse. Posture helps a lot with your overall health.

We writers and readers spend far too much time hunched over our computers, laptops, or tablets. Make a conscious effort to straighten up. Be sure to stand and stretch every thirty minutes or so. Best to take a twenty minute walk a day, if you can.

Hey, it's Friday. You can slack off a bit - get outside and roam. Your future back and self will thank you.   Cheers everybody

  1. I straightened my back while reading this.
I do try to get up at least once an hour. Plus I hit the gym several times a week. I want to die old and healthy.

  2. Hi Joanne .. yes how true .. and as Alex says I straightened up too ... I'm walking much more and without pain after my hip replacement at the beginning of the year ... and do a fair amount as often as I can ... I need to stretch exercise more and want to build that it in.

Good luck to you and your Dad - he must be so pleased to be out of hospital - and I wish him well in his recovery mode - all the best - Hilary

    1. glad you are without pain now. Recovery is tough, but you have to want to get better and work at it. Thanks for all your good wishes for Dad. He's persistent

  3. "Stand Up and Sit Up Straight, Sue", my Mother's words my whole life. So I do...most of the time...she catches me slouching sometimes...I know cause I hear her voice from heaven. Sounds like your Dad is getting those wise words from his PTherapist and you. Wishing him a full and standing straight recovery.

  4. Good advise! And yes, I sat up straighter when I read it, too. :)

I hope your dad is doing well. All week, I was on jury duty, and in the course of the case, I learned way too much about back injures, degeneration, surgeries, and various treatments. Some pretty horrific stuff. I hope your dad has an uneventful recovery. (You are such a sweet daughter to be there with him.)

    Happy weekend!

I hope I am so blessed when the time comes that I'm eating little more than soft food.

    1. Thanks. I'm lucky that Dad is pretty easy going and my local siblings do SO much. You've got to work on the curmudgeon thing, Al - then you'll get help

    2. I try to affect a "Cranky Old Man" persona.
It really works at O'Grady's restaurant in Souderton where we all eat soft food.

  6. I suddenly became conscious with my posture. :)
It's true though. I've got scoliosis and when my back hurts it really affects my whole being.

    1. and you are young. Dad's just been so fortunate, that this turn of events has seemed extra hard. But he's doing better. Take care

  7. I hope your dad heals quickly. Taking care of ourselves every day does keep us healthier in the long run, I think.
