Summer Solstice Birthday

An oldie picture, but I don't have many of my mother. I've written this before - she always dodged the camera, ever elusive.  This is back in the 1980s -  Lori's early years in college and we were visiting her. I was in from TX. My brother is missing. So young and vibrant.

Today - June 21st is my mother's birthday. She's been gone twenty five years now.
Happy Birthday Mom!  I'll eat some chocolate cake in her honor.

I liked this quote by Russell Baker:
Children rarely want to know who their parents were
before they were parents, and when age
finally stirs their curiosity, there is no parent left to tell them

  1. That quote sure rings true. Being elusive to a camera sure is a skill.

  4. Hi Joanne - have a lovely day remembering memories and that chocolate cake sounds good - though not today - way too hot!

Yes it's interesting isn't .. I'm encouraging an 88 year old to write his story down ...as his kids haven't so far shown any interest - but if they're like me they will ...

Cheers and here's to a really good half year ahead ... before we get to the wonderful upward climb through Spring ... I'm going to enjoy Summer - while we have it ... cheers Hilary

  6. That's a true quote. We don't care, when we're kids, that our parents were also kids. That's confusing.

Joanne, I'm sorry you lost your mother when you and she were so young.

I think that's you on the left, but I'm not sure. You and your sister look a like in that photo.

Warm loving thoughts and I hope you fully enjoy(ed) that chocolate cake.

    1. thanks Robyn. You are so sweet. I am 2nd from left. Lori is 10 years younger so she was way too young to lose mom. But we are all doing okay. Chocolate cake solves a lot!

  8. Great post. That quote by Russell Baker is heart-breakingly true. At least I had the added perspective of working in the same office with my mother the summer after my freshman year in college. It opened my eyes to how smart, capable, and highly respected she was by her co-workers. My father treated her... let's just say he didn't treat her like the amazing woman she was.
