Swimming With a Shark - Kevin O'Leary

Another great evening at UTA - Maverick Speaker Series.  So interesting.

He's Mr. Wonderful on Shark Tank - known for tough talk, no nonsense. However, the man knows his stuff and his talk about entrepreneurship was quite fascinating.  So much is common sense, and yet to go into business and expect others to back you is nervy.  There are thousands of applications and over the years only 400 businesses have gotten the attention and dollars from the Shark Tank team.

Mr. O'Leary gave excellent examples of pitches, what went right, what can go wrong, and how a business can grow and be savvy.  He discussed and gave some essential points for success.

Quite frankly - the place I work - wrong, wrong, wrong. Yes, we make money, but we (in theory) are destined for failure sooner or later.  The owner will not delegate, delegate, delegate....and that's essential.  There's also the question of "access" - employees need to feel that concerns can be addressed and dealt with in a civilized manner. Let's just say that things are way too personal where I work.  (To be fair, I will say my boss has been very generous to me in regards to health care, and I am very grateful.   But.......I am indebted too and it could backfire on me.)

All in all, the talk was impressive and Mr. O'Leary has his hat in the ring for Prime Minister of Canada (he's a citizen of that awesome country).  Could prove quite intriguing. Stay tuned.

  1. He is smart when it comes to business indeed, but if he gets in as prime minister, we're screwed.

  2. Sounds like a fascinating presentation. Delegation is key in business I do believe. Maybe your boss will learn that sooner than later!

  3. I didn't know Mr. O'Leary was planning to run for Prime Minister of Canada! We watch Shark Tank. I wouldn't survive a presentation to the sharks. Mr. Wonderful is very smart and very intimidating, but PM? I wonder if those US Citizens who planned to run off to Canada after the election are rethinking their decision?

  5. Yeah, I'm sure if most of us looked at our place of business we'd wonder how it'd made it that far.

    1. it's funny. This week has been extra challenging and I think back to this talk. I want a copy of a power point and go through it with my boss. Ha!!! (or then it could be my former boss)

  6. I've never watched that show on purpose. I once got roped into watching it while visiting our younger son, but I was paying more attention to the grandkids than to the TV. Not my kinda show. (Not that many are these days.)

It sounds like it was an interesting talk, even if it probably make everyone in the audience question the way their own workplace was being run. Just think... you may have seen a presentation from a future PM. Good for you, but I don't know how good it'd be for Canada. (He's probably get along swell with the POTUS, though...)

  8. Most managers seem to thing that the way to run a business is to be mean and ruthless. Little do they know...

This was interesting, Joanne. Thanks for sharing, and I hope you're having a good week.

  9. I've always had a hard time delegating cause in the time it took me to explain, answer questions and supervise, I could have done it myself in less time.

    1. it was quite interesting. I really don't watch the show - might only catch a few minutes of it. But it's been quite successful and folks do have some darn good ideas.
