A to Z - Eye on Texas: Q

Eye on Texas Q - heads to the Texas/Oklahoma border to visit Quanah, TX. It is a city formed in 1884 as a stop on a railway and named for the last Comanche chief - Quanah Parker.

Based on Wikipedia, Quanah looks like it has a small town feel. Copper Breaks State Park is south of the city. There's also a small railroad museum.

Let's have a quote from the Downton Abbey -
Cora: "I might send her over to visit my aunt. She could get to know New York"
Countess: "Oh, I don't think things are quite that desperate."

Send her to Quanah, Texas - that could shake things up.

Happy Q Day

  1. Quanah. I kind of like that for a girl's name for some reason.

  3. Believe it or not...have not been there, but have read about Quanah Parker in Texas History. Long way from West Texas, but they have heard of Odessa....in fact they will be playing tennis there today. How's that for alphabet coincidence O~P~Q?!

  4. Speaking of Comanches...I just finished reading "The Searchers," which, as you probably know, takes place in Texas and involves Comanches. It is the ONLY book that I've ever read which wasn't as good as the movie. Of course, the movie had John Wayne in it, but the ending of the book just left me "meh."

    1. You are ahead of me Al - I don't read westerns and never watched westerns. Why am I in Texas ? I have no idea. Seemed like a good idea with a job after college. And I married a Texan so I'm a tad stuck.

  8. Have to admit all this was new to me so it made for a really interesting read. I looked up the meaning of the name Quanah and found out it meant fragrant - something I wouldn't really associate with a male name normally!

  11. I'm amazed you're having no problems with cities for each letter, especially Q, Joanne. Great work. I'm learning about places I'd never heard of. If I'm ever near the Tx/Oklahoma border, I'll pay Quanah a visit.

  12. Hi Joanne - I've never heard of the name Quanah for man or town -interesting read .. and I guess a good town to visit - small and fewer crowds, yet the Park nearby ...

Now I wish I'd watched Downton Abbey!! Still I learn here and can read the posh upperclass English accent as I see what you're getting the Dowager to say ..

    Cheers Hilary

    1. Not too late to watch Downton on reruns. It's so good and Dame Maggie Smith is such a superb actress. She makes the show with her clipped accent and a roll of the eye.

  13. Looks like a town right out of an old western. I'll be so sad when Downton Abbey ends next year.
