Bored
you
never mentioned boredom in my mother’s presence
she
could rustle up a work project before the words
left
your mouth
she
would slap a brush or a rag into your hand, clippers or a
shovel
and point in all directions
oh
she was slick, and fast, setting a pace
that
left you pleading for release from your house
arrest
to
this day, I’m never bored. I might be on a slowdown
or
between projects. Antsy and distracted
contemplating
life choices
but
never bored
or
that voice in my head (sounds an awful lot like mom)
steers
me into motion
and
something gets
cleaned
Haha. I think when I become a mom, I'll be like yours. Always looking for something to do.

DeleteI know - bored ... never - but I do like to switch off occasionally ... but Cleaning things is good at times!! Cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteswitch off is a better phrase than bored
DeleteHa! My 4th grade teacher would tell us, "Only boring people get bored." And my mom would do the same as yours. Now, I think a little bit of boredom is good; it's when your body rests and your brain processes the things that it absorbed in the previous day.
ReplyDeleteagreed!
DeleteLove this! I saw a sign hanging in someone's house who has four kids (and plenty of relatives' kids constantly visiting). It read:
ReplyDeleteBored? Have you...
Been creative?
Outside play?
Read a book?
Exercised?
Done something helpful?
If my parents had that growing up, I know they would have pointed to it many times!
the key is do something or at least look like you are doing something
DeleteThings brings back memories of when my daughter was little and sitting in the back of the car composing a song called Bored :) Great post.
ReplyDeleteat least she was creating a bored song! fun
DeleteI have no idea what the word even means anymore...
ReplyDeleteFunny your mother found things for you to do.
I don't say I'm bored now, I'm just being lazy
DeleteHa! I love this. I never have a problem finding something to do.
ReplyDeleteI'm never short of a project or two, it's time I'm in need of.
ReplyDeletetime does go by too fast
DeleteLove this post! I often get annoyed at people, mostly children who say IM BORED! I think once indecision, laziness, or fatigue set in it is often mistaken for boredom. Enjoy the A to Z Challenge!
ReplyDeletethanks for visiting. We are never bored in Apri
DeleteThere is always something to do
ReplyDeletelike read blog posts. Thanks
DeleteHaha! I can totally relate! My mom didn't believe in boredom and would convince you real fast that you weren't actually bored, because there were always chores to be done! Fun poem; thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteAh...I see our mother's have met...and likely agreed on all your poem points on beating boredom. Great words of wisdom and wit with a bit of whackyness...fun!!!

I know you are never bored!!!
DeleteLOL must be a generational thing. I just commented on another "Bored" post that as kids we didn't dare say the word bored or we were given some odious job.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty good at entertaining myself by daydreaming or people watching. The only time I truly get bored is when my granddaughter is watching her beloved "Dora the Explorer" video for the millionth time.
yep - you can tune out on that one
DeleteHaha! Great post! Never say 'that word!'

DeleteOh gosh, yes, my mum was a demon at finding things for me to do! I love this piece.
ReplyDeleteI bet you make sure your boys are never bored
DeleteWe quickly learned as kids to never say that in front of Mom.
ReplyDeleteAnd our kids quickly learned to never say that in front of US.
It's a circle of life thing, I think.
and I bet you never say it to Mrs. Penwasser - she'll put you on a project!

DeleteVery funny! I am not usually bored either. Drives my husband crazy sometimes that I cannot even watch TV or a movie without also doing a coloring page or crocheting. Great post!
ReplyDeleteyep - I tend to read and watch TV
DeleteFunny and clever. I shall be back. Visiting from A-Z challenge. P.S. My mother was the same.
ReplyDeletethanks. I shall visit you in a bit
DeleteLovely! I am not bored often, either. :)

thanks for stopping by
DeleteI'm never bored, either. My problem is that I'm always running out of time to get things done.
ReplyDeleteyou are a busy person - lots of arts and gardening!
DeleteI understand your mother completely. I hate the word bored. I worked with a teacher who would say, "Only boring people get bored." I never liked her phrase. But I understood the angst she felt. I would put you busy too.
