Remember the movie Election with Reese Witherspoon? Well, Tom Perrotta's creation is back in Tracy Flick Can't Win. I laughed the entire time I read this book - all chapters from various viewpoints (the principal, the former quarterback, the School Board member, and Tracy herself).
Jack, the principal, is retiring and now Tracy has her turn. She's been the Assistant Principal who handled the time when Jack had a heart attack. She's earned this, damn it. Time for a break. At forty something, she's been spinning her wheels in this small town and it's time to shine.
But...slowly she can sense the tide is turning against her. Some school board folks are meeting in the local restaurant. Her interview with the Superintendent takes a turn. She's always hated football.
Tom Perrotta has a wicked sense of humor and can skewer the culture of small town politics. He's nailed it in Tracy Flick Can't Win, and frankly I hope we see Reese back in the title role of a movie version.
