Memorial Weekend

The drought is over in the DFW area. It's been raining, and raining, and raining. The poor flag has been sitting in the garage corner day by day by day eagerly waiting to be unfurled. However, it shall not wave proudly this Memorial Weekend due to rain and high winds.

And for the first time in a long time, I doubt I'll take a dunk in the pool for Memorial Weekend. No patio sit, no sunscreen, no friends with boats on the lake, and no shorts. Oh, I'll have fun, but it's a most peculiar Texas Memorial Weekend.

But we shall reflect and be grateful for our freedoms, the roof over our head, and the joy of rain.

I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, and its stupidity - Dwight D. Eisenhower in a speech January 1946.

  1. You'll have to come up with some new Memorial Day weekend festivities. We are to be warm and clear, so I shall unfurl my flag for you.

  2. We had a nice afternoon yesterday and snuck in a fish fry, played some horseshoes and washers. But today is starting off rather rainy indeed. Don't know if we can expect such fairing off. We're going to cook a pot of red beans. That can simmer all afternoon indoors and be eaten no matter what the weather. I do hope it is nice enough I can make my little pilgrimage to pay my respects tomorrow.

  3. Hope you enjoy your weekend in spite of the rain!

  4. That's a powerful quote. May we need forget to honor those who fought for freedom.

    Enjoy the long weekend. :)

  5. Loved that quote from Ike. I also like the one (which I'll paraphrase, because I'm too lazy to Google. And how pitiful is that?) from Robert E. Lee (after the Battle of Fredericksburg, I believe): "It's a good thing that war is a terrible thing. Lest we grow fond of it."
    Stay dry!!

  6. Sorry you've had so much rain over the holiday. Hope you still found ways to celebrate. I wonder if you went back to the movies. What a powerful quote, Joanne.

    1. we had plenty of fun (and naps). You'll be seeing reviews of Mad Max: Fury Road and also Far from the Madding Crowd. Quite the contrast is plots!
