On a more serious note - Maria Ressa, co-founder and CEO of the news site Rappler in the Philippines, won the Nobel Peace Prize. She was convicted of "cyber libel" by her government last year, and has been unable to travel abroad. Hopefully she can get a flight to Oslo for the ceremony.
She says after the 10th anniversary of Rappler - It just shows the role that journalists play. Without facts, you can't have truth. Without truth, you can't have trust. How can you have democracy without that? This the fabric that holds us together: shared reality.
Words to ponder on a Wednesday.
Hi Joanne - lovely photos of colour for our gloomy autumn day (today); I think I had heard about Maria Ressa ... but didn't know about Rappler news ... I sincerely hope she will be well. We need true journalists with facts that are trustworthy ... in each and every country.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Hilary
The nice thing about the Botanic Garden is the conservatory is lovely on any weather day since it's indoors and rather steamy - rain forest style. As for Ms. Ressa, she's been featured in magazines like Time in regards to her bravery as a journalist. Tough times in the world for those who dare to seek the truth.
DeleteTake care!
Nice place to hang out for the day.
ReplyDeleteWish more news sites shared reality.
It's a tough world for news, but fortunately some still try to shine the light and forge a path.
DeleteIt's wonderful that Maria Ressa has been given this high honor. I hope it helps increase her freedoms. Her words are indeed profound.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Indeed, she's been on my radar. So many journalists are being squashed, but they keep fighting. Thanks and take care!
DeleteEarnestly wish truth and democracy were back in fashion at my end of the world. More power to Maria!
ReplyDeleteall over the world Nila, we need some all over. Peace to you
