Eye on Texas salutes the letter R and let's pretend it's just Rayville for my husband. But no - Raymondville is considered the Gateway to the Rio Grande Valley with a population of 10,000.
Agriculture is huge in this subtropical climate. There is always a chance for a hurricane to blow through
Raymondville was organized in the early 1900s, so the buildings are not too old
It's a quaint community only fifty miles from Padre Island - white beaches and the warm Gulf of Mexico. It's proximity to Mexico allows for a decent trade economy. My guess is it's darn important to Hablas Espanol in Raymondville and own some swimsuits for your weekends at the beach. No snow shovels required. I have no doubt my blog friends from the Northeast might be perking up their ears and eyes on this town.
Oh dear - the Countess from Downton Abbey has a comment - "What is a weekend?"
I wish the very small picture of the building was bigger so I could have a proper look - what is it?
ReplyDeleteI love that quote from the Countess.

not sure what the building is - prob. a gov't building of some sort. It looks rather formal. Too big for a school back then, I think?
DeleteWow, this town is definitely on the most southern tip of Texas. No wonder Espanol is needed here.... Like the fact it's so close to one of Texas' most lovely beaches. One usually never thinks of Texas having beaches....
ReplyDeletePadre beaches are nice. Further north on the gulf - like Galveston, the beaches and water are very muddy looking. I prefer Florida's side of the gulf - that's the best
DeleteHi Joanne - love the Dowager's comments - I can hear her. Re Raymondville .. sounds a good place to know about .. especially out of Hurricane season .. cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteDoes the Rio Grande River empty near there?
ReplyDeleteit does empty into the gulf of mexico, and from the map it does look close
DeleteSo you are out to Stump Sue...well, you did it. I've NOT heard of Raymondville...are you sure it's not Ramonvilla? Wonder if it's a replacement town...first one blown away....1990's that's really new for a Texas border town. Lordy, I bet it's HOT there!

Looks quaint, and in a good location. As hot as Texas gets, it's likely cooler there, so close to water.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a nice town except for the hurricanes. My limited Spanish speaking skills wouldn't get me very far either. This is one of my favorite Dowager quotes.
