A to Z - Eye on Texas: V

Eye on Texas - V visits Valentine Texas.  It was founded in 1882 on February 14th by a railroad construction crew. It's one of several towns named Valentine whereby the US Post service cancels cards on that date.
The old TV show Cahill, US Marshall was set in Valentine.
Cactus abounds amidst the 187 residents. I bet there are a few scorpions and tarantulas in this desert environment.

Happy Valentine's Day!

  3. Were the construction crew very romantic, or just lacking in imagination? :-)

  5. I knew it would be your Letter V. Okay, I have history in Valentine as I've been there many times and through there more times than I can count. My roommate in college was from Valentine...her mother was the Postmistress. One of their MOST famous citizens was an artist friend and college colleague....Boyd Elder...look him up in connection to The Eagles...yep, the band. Last I heard he still lives in Valentine.

  6. I think that's rather mean not having any post on Valentine's Day! Really interesting and I also loved the heart shaped cactus :) Special Teaching at Pempi’s Palace

  7. Sweet name for a town. It's interesting, though, that there are an odd # of people. I'd hate to be single in Valentine, especially on Valentine's Day.

  8. Hi Joanne - what a great story .. for the town to be named Valentine, after the railway crew named it thus. Fascinating to read some of the history and then add in Sue's comment ..

    Cheers Hilary

  9. Texas was on the news this morning. Apparently, a big swatch of the state is under a tornado watch. Yep, this is the time of year I'd rather not be in Texas. Well, now...and August.

  10. Well, howdy Joanne! It's about time I found your great state of Texas blog - I live in Bulverde, Texas (The front door to the hill country) I'm trying to get through each one of your posts! I would LOVE to visit these small towns. I'll be storytelling in the rural counties up in the panhandle this June - should be fun!

  11. The railroad crew picked a name that everyone would easily remember. I'm surprised that none of the residents complained about the post office closing on Valentine's Day. There must not be any Hallmark stores nearby.
